Church School

St. Matthew’s Christian Education program is offered for youth in preschool through high school.

Following the children’s message delivered at the beginning of Sunday worship services, classes are offered for students in pre-school through high school. Lessons are scripturally based and often include crafts, stories, activities and discussion to provide a variety of experiences.

The summer program is based on a program developed by the Director of Christian Education who develops a curriculum usually revolving around stories for the Bible.

Youth Activities

We offer a balanced program of youth activities that includes fellowship, study, worship and service. The program focuses on activities that excite a busy cohort of students, helping them grow in spirit and service.

A sample of activities include:

  • Vacation bible school featuring a marketplace, arts and crafts, storytelling, and music
  • Overnight mission events
  • Annual Easter egg hunts and Christmas parties for both church youth and the local community at large
  • Preparing and leading a Sunday worship service annually
  • Preparation and serving of dinners and lunches for the needy including preparation of 4,500 sandwiches for Martha’s Table, a DC Soup Kitchen
  • Participation with adult volunteers of St. Matthews in Camp Joy, a one week camping experience during which adults and youth repair the homes of low income, elderly or disabled.

Discussion Groups

The continuing education of our congregation is a priority at St. Matthew. Educational opportunities are offered through bible study, reading groups and educational gatherings. Educational gatherings include gatherings on current topics such as the recent discussion of the challenges associated with relationships between Israeli and Palestinian citizens. Similar meetings and discussions have occurred with representatives of a Muslim community to foster a better understanding between our two faiths.
